What is the Georgia Career Information System?

One way the Commerce City School System has provided career and post secondary education information to students is through the Georgia Career Information System (GCIS), located in the Career Center at the high school. The purpose of GCIS is to provide comprehensive, current And accurate state and national occupational and educational information. This includes occupational descriptions and information covering 95% of Georgia's employment as well as school and program data on 200 Georgia schools (college, universities, technical institutes, and proprietary schools) and 3,500 national institutions. In addition, grant, scholarship, and loan information is available representing millions of dollars in available private-source funds. GCIS is helpful to college preparatory students as they consider possible careers and search for colleges Offering suitable programs. Those students interested in a College Prep or Technical/Career high school diploma are guided by the large amount of information offered by GCIS on careers and appropriate technical post secondary education.

What is Apprenticeship?

The Commerce High School Youth Apprenticeship Program is an educational option that prepares high school students for the world of work through a combination of applied academics and structured work-based learning. Students gain a deeper understanding of how to apply academic skills in real life occupations and circumstances.

A student may submit an application for the apprenticeship program as early as his/her 10th grade year (second semester). High school youth who have reached junior standing may be eligible for enrollment in the apprenticeship program as an apprentice (paid, structured, on-the-job training position). At the end of the 12th grade, the student continues the career path through joint post secondary education and work-based learning. See your counselor for more details.
