Standardized Testing Introduction Commerce High School participates in several testing activities during the school year. These tests help with placement recommendations as well as give an indication of what students have mastered during their academic classes. SAT and ACT The SAT and ACT are college entrance examinations. Most colleges and universities will accept either test. The SAT consists of two parts: verbal and math. Each part is scored on a scale from 200-800, for a combined composite score from 400-1600. The ACT measures abilities and achievement in English, math, reading and science reasoning. The test is scored on a scale of 1 through 36. The ACT is very similar to the achievement tests students have taken throughout their school life, such as the ITBS. Consequently, students are often more comfortable with the ACT than with the SAT. The SAT and ACT are given on specified Saturdays from October through June. Students must register by the deadline dates. Students planning to attend a college or university should take the SAT or ACT during the spring of their junior year and again during the fall of their senior year. PSAT The PSAT is the practice test for the SAT. The test in given on a national test date in October. The test is designed for juniors. However, the Georgia Department of Education pays for all sophomores to take the test. The PSAT is also the test used by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation for its Scholarships. Only juniors may qualify for the scholarships. ASVAB The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery is a multi-aptitude vocational/academic test given to junior and seniors. The ASVAB is a career exploration tool. It measures aptitudes that are related to success in different jobs. GHSWT The Georgia High School Writing Test is administered during the 11th grade year. Students are asked to produce a response to one on-demand persuasive writing prompt. Students must write a composition of no more than two pages on an assigned topic. Students may have five opportunities to take and pass the test before the end of the 12th grade year. GHSGT The Georgia High School Graduation Test is a five-part test that is administered during March of the 11th grade year. This is a curriculum-based test assessment that seeks to measure the student's academic accomplishments. Students may have five opportunities to take and pass this test before the end of the 12th grade year. EOCT End of Course Testing is a testing system that will be officially implemented during the 2004-2005 school year. The tests will be administered in the subject area classes and will account for 20% of the final grade in those classes.
Issues Involving the Georgia High School Graduation Tests Students who fail to pass all of the test required will receive a "Certificate of Attendance" after they have met the course work required for graduation. Students may continue to return to take the tests for an unlimited time. Once all test have been passes, the student will receive a high school diploma.
Units Required for Promotion A student must earn at least 4 units to be promoted to the 10th grade. A student must earn at least 12 units to be promoted to the 11th grade. A student must earn at least 20 units to be promoted to the 12th grade. Twenty-eight units are required for GRADUATION. All parts of the GA High School Graduation Tests (writing, English, math, science, and social studies) must be passed in order to receive a high school diploma. Commerce High School offers students the opportunity to choose from four career majors while pursuing a Technical/Career Preparatory diploma or a Dual Seal diploma**. Three units or more in one specific Technical/Career area are needed to fulfill the requirements set by the state for each diploma.
** It is highly recommended that college prep students pursue a dual-seal diploma (college preparatory and technical career preparatory). |
