2011-12 Teachers of the Year
Commerce Primary School - Mrs. Robbin Brown
Mrs. Brown earned a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics/Child Development from the University of Georgia. She is currently enrolled in the GA TAPP Program to earn her certification in early childhood education.
Robbin has taught at the preschool level for 28 years.
Robbin has been the Pre-K Lead Teacher from 1998- present. Prior to coming to Commerce Primary to teach, Robbin was a preschool teacher at the United Methodist Church Preschool from 1992-1997. Robbin worked as a Child Development Specialist at the McPhaul Center at the University of Georgia from 1983-1988.
Robbin has served on a number of committees at Commerce Primary, including SACS Committees and the Sunshine Committee. Robbin is described as “being open, approachable and always maintaining a positive relationship with parents, administrators and colleagues.”
Commerce Elementary School - Mrs. Susan Redmon
Mrs. Redmon is a graduate of Commerce High School. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education from Brenau College. Later, she earned a Masters in Early Childhood Education from Brenau College.
Susan has been a teacher for 28 years. Susan has taught at Commerce Elementary School since 2000. She taught third grade for 7 years and 4th grade for 5 years. Prior to teaching at CES, Susan taught third grade at Maysville Elementary School for 16 years.
Susan has served on a number of committees at Commerce Elementary, including the Leadership Committee, Textbook Selection, RTI, SACS Committees, and the School Council.
Mrs. Redmon’s students consistently perform well on state assessments. In 2010, ALL of Mrs. Redmon’s students either met or exceeded in the areas of reading, ELA, math, and science. In math, 96% of her students exceeded. In science, 75% of her students exceeded. Mrs. Redmon is described by former students and their parents as having high expectations that “paid off” later!
Commerce Middle School - Mrs. Carolee Jones
Mrs. Jones has been teaching 7th grade mathematics at Commerce Middle School since 2007.
Mrs. Jones earned a Bachelor of Science in Middle Grades Education from Emmanuel College in 2007. She completed her gifted endorsement in 2010 through Northeast Georgia RESA. Mrs. Jones earned a Master of Arts in Middle Grades Education from Piedmont College in 2012.
During her years teaching at Commerce Middle, Mrs. Jones has served on the Leadership Team, the Advisory Design Team, the Safety Committee, and the Transitions Committee.
During Mrs. Jones tenure, over 90% of 7th grade students have met or exceeded in mathematics each year on the CRCT. In 2010, 94% of Mrs. Jones’ 7th grade students met or exceeded in mathematics on the CRCT with 40% exceeding!
Mrs. Jones is described by the Dean of the School of Education at Emmanuel College as a “team player, willing to give her own ideas but always open to the ideas of others and willing to compromise in order to do what is best for the students and for her school community.”
Commerce High School - Mr. Walt Massey
Mr. Massey has taught mathematics at Commerce High School since 2002.
Walt earned a Bachelor of Science in Math Education from the University of Georgia. He completed his Masters in Sports Management from the US Sports Academy. He will complete his Education Specialist in Teacher Leadership in November 2011.
During his tenure at CHS, Mr. Massey has served in a variety of leadership roles, including Math Department Chair, the Leadership Team, SACS Committees, the School Council, and sponsor of Student Government.
During Mr. Massey’s tenure, CHS has met or exceeded the state’s performance on every math-content assessment between 2007-2010. The CHS Pass Rate on all Math EOCTs from 2007-2010 was 69% compared to the State Pass Rate of 50%.
A former student describes Mr. Massey as “one of the most influential people in his life as a teacher, coach, co-worker, Christian, community leader, and friend. He states that he is a better person for having Mr. Massey as a part of his life.”
